36th Annual Superfest Disability Film Festival

If there’s anything I regret around Superfest it’s that I don’t blog about how much I love the festival all year long. This year’s the 36th festival, and as always, it’s a great lineup of Deaf and disability films from nearly a dozen different countries representing some of the true diversity of our communities. Through the Social Audio Description Collective, I got to work on audio description for three films and work with over 20 voice artists who read aloud the subtitles to add to the audio description track.

Superfest will be in person in Berkeley and San Francisco as well as online. Tickets are on a sliding scale so that no one has to miss it because of cost. If you do have the funds to pay for a ticket, please consider doing so. Your payment helps the festival provide the free and low-cost tickets to community members who need the discounts.

Films will be available on demand for online passholders October 20th through the 23rd. For people going to the venues in person, those screenings are on the 22nd and 23rd.

Virtual Event Access

All of the films have captions and have the option to toggle on and off audio description. In addition, all films in the Sunday screening can be watched with accompanying ASL video translation by using the All4Access app on your phone or tablet while watching the films on a different device. Read instructions for All4Access here.

This is the longest-running disability film festival in the world, and it’s one also a standout because the films are chosen with Deaf and disabled audiences in mind. These films aren’t the disability awareness or disability etiquette or inclusion variety designed to educate or entertain non-disabled people. You won’t find any, “Hello, my name is this, and my diagnosis is this” films here! They go so far beyond all of that to explore pain, dancing, medication, sex, ableism, politics, humor, class, aging, love, community, culture, and on and on.
