The Krempels Center was founded by a peer with traumatic brain injury who saw how far-reaching our community’s needs are: from financial hardship to isolation. The organization has grown over the years and provides many types of supports to folks with brain injury and their families and care partners. Members of the Center interviewed each other for this wonderful oral history project. Here’s how they describe it on their site:

“The goal of this project is to increase awareness of this unique population that often goes unseen and unheard. It also provides brain injury survivors an opportunity to tell their stories…stories of hope and triumph of the human spirit.”

Notice that they don’t refer to us as the “silent epidemic” that the news often calls us. Calling us “silent” sort of puts the blame on us for not speaking out in public more. But look. We speak out. If you just stop by our place with a microphone and ask us to talk, we will. We are not silent.
