Spotlight on Disability Film Festivals: Picture this…film festival

Listen to this post:

High fives all around! I’ve managed to alert you to an upcoming film festival in plenty of time to both attend it and even submit your film to the 2015 competition! I know I will be submitting a short to this one.

The Picture this…film festival is part of the Calgary SCOPE Society. They’re a non-profit working with communities and people with developmental disabilities. And awesomely, entry into the competition and exhibition is free for filmmakers. The festival portion is a competition. And the exhibition portion is called “Picture this…on the road.”

The festival features films that are about disability and/or films on any subject that were produced, directed and/or written by people with disabilities.

This year is the festival’s Lucky 13th year. The festival and their library of films continue to grow each year with international media creations of wonderfulness. The seeds for this festival were planted with a project by the Community Development department of Calgary SCOPE Society called “Making Movies”. Individuals who wanted to tell a story got to make a 5 minute film with professional filmmakers.  It was a great success. The folks who started it knew there were people around the world who would want to get their stories out as well, and that there will always be an audience. So in 2001, the festival was created.

Picture this…is looking to use film to get a global conversation going around disability culture. By the looks of their past entries, they really are doing that.

Submissions are open until September 30th, 2014 for the festival in February, 2015. Get filming!
