Superfest Showcase online: Because disability community knows what’s up

Listen to this post:

First off, I very sincerely acknowledge that COVID-19 has led to turmoil, grief, isolation, loss of income, great fear, and more for many. At a time when we’re told to stay home and wash our hands regularly, well, not everyone has a home. Some people’s homes are the unsafe places where violence brews. Not everyone has access to soap, clean water, enough food. You’ll find discussion like this–and covering many more overlapping issues–in a lot of the disability community, where many of us already aim for interdependence, not independence.

For those of you who have access to a good Internet connection and have some time Thursday evening, March 19th, I’d urge you to check out an event that will be spectacular. May the possibility of some outstanding cinema be a respite.

This is from the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability and Superfest International Disability Film Festival:

For the first time, Superfest is going to host a screening of some of our past films online because we know that as many disabled people are at higher risk of COVID-19 and are staying inside, disability culture is going to be key to getting people through this trying time. While Superfest is typically a Bay Area event, this provides an opportunity to spread the word much farther to the wider disability community who we hope would benefit from this escape!

Here’s the registration link for the free event: TinyURL.com/SuperfestOnline
And here’s the Facebook event: facebook.com/events/254581848902015/. Or go to Facebook.com and search for “Superfest Showcase.”
All films will play with open audio description and captioning, and live captioning will be provided for introductions and conversation. For other questions and concerns, contact Emily Beitiks: beitiks@sfsu.edu.”

I’ll be there on Thursday night virtually. I hope you will too. Please be sure to go to TinyURL.com/SuperfestOnline to register before the event. It is free.
