Blind-Centered Audio Description Chat Watch and Listen Party

Listen to this post:

Thomas Reid, Nefertiti Matos Olivares, and I have been co-hosting a live conversation and panel series called Blind-Centered Audio Description Chats since December, 2022. We started out on a social media platform that had a thing called Spaces, and we later tried out a few other spots like LinkedIn and Clubhouse. We’re excited about landing on Zoom recently because now we can host watch and listen parties. Which is what we’re going to do on 4/20!

Blind-Centered Audio Description Chat is teaming up with Social Audio Description Collective to host a watch and listen party featuring the short audio described films Impaired Volumes 1 and 2 by brothers Carmen and Antonio Papalia. The films explore mutual care and the cultivation of cannabis for pain relief and were audio described by SADC. Oliver Baker wrote the audio description, and Thomas narrated. We’ll play the films and then chat with Carmen and Antonio about the process of collaborating on the audio description with SADC.

Our conversations aim to always be blind-centered in how we talk about audio description, who makes it, who it’s for, and what it does, and we want everyone to come. Filmmakers, audio describers, film lovers, are all invited, whether blind, low vision, or non-blind. Being in conversation together with AD creators and AD consumers is the absolute best way to learn about creative, exciting ways to make and promote audio description. And many, like Thomas and Nefertiti, both create and use AD, so you can’t top this.

Register for the free event on Zoom.

Auto-captions will be available for the conversation. Films have open audio description and open captions.

This is April 20th, yes, that’s 4/20, at 2 PM Eastern / 11 AM Pacific.

We record the BCAD chats and then edit and transcribe the recordings. You can find all of the past events on the Reid My Mind Radio podcast feed. Or go to ReidMyMind.com and search for BCAD Chat. Can’t wait to chat with y’all there!
