We’ve done it again! Cross-disability stuff and mixed media stuff!
First off: Dis/Representation, a disability justice literature project by Disability Art and Culture Project, Portland Community College Disability Services, GimpGirl Community, and other community partners. Each month, we read and discuss blog posts, articles, poetry and short fiction. They cover the ways that disability is a social justice issue that overlaps with so many other justice areas like racism, sexism and homophobia. We use the term “ableism” here, but some folks prefer the UK’s version, “disableism.” Here are some basics on the FWD (feminists with disabilities) for a way forward blog called “What Is Ableism? Five Things About Ableism You Should Know.”
You can check out our reading list and info about the next group on August 22nd at Portland Community College Cascade Campus at www.disrepresentation.com. Anyone can participate. It doesn’t matter what your relationship to disability is or if you’re even in town! Folks from all over participate each time through a conference call or through their computer. We have an open chat box, live real-time captioning, accessible reading summaries, and facilitators. The group is really dynamic.
This month we are stepping it up and hosting a live poetry reading by William L. Alton from his new chapbook, “Drowning Is A Slow Business.” And after the reading and discussion, we’ll head on over to Elevated Coffee for an artist reception. Several works by Bill, Nicki Sinner, and Cheryl Green from a July group exhibition at Splendorporium are up at the coffee shop.
