Spotlight on Disability Film Festivals: Cinema Touching Disability

Check out the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities and the Cinema Touching Disability Film Festival! Submissions are now open for the 2013 competition. I submitted my film just this morning!

This festival started in 2004. The idea was “to create a film festival to counter negative stereotypes about people with disabilities and to celebrate positive portrayals of disability culture.” The festival supports the development of young and emerging filmmakers in high school, college, and beyond as well as established filmmakers. They have quite a nice roster of exclusive interviews and awards.

What’s really exciting is that the Coalition is based in advocacy, consulting, and public awareness activities. They recognize the importance of film for storytelling and sharing ideas. Through the festival, disabled filmmakers can participate in advocacy and artistic expression with large, diverse audiences in a creative, engaged way.

I desperately love the “reelchair” logo, which is a wheelchair that has an old fashioned film reel in place of the wheel. A million points to someone who can help me figure out how to get my blog name, “brainreel,” into a logo!
